ABSTRACT

There is an ever-urgent need for accessing real-time crowdedness and airflow information for indoor study spaces in universities, for example, to control COVID-19 transmission risk. Even before the pandemic, many students spent valuable time finding suitable study areas with proper lighting, low noise, and ample seating. This paper presents a pilot system, CampusX, which aims to provide students with useful real-time information about study spaces on campus. Our system collects and analyzes environmental data before presenting them to students as useful information. This helps them to select the most suitable study spaces. The main components of this system include a sensor platform, data collection and processing pipelines, networking, and an interactive web-application. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Teleoperation of robotic systems for precise and delicate object grasping requires high-fidelity haptic feedback to obtain comprehensive real-time information about the grasp. In such cases, the most common approach is to use kinesthetic feedback. However, a single contact point information is insufficient to detect the dynamically changing shape of soft objects. This paper proposes a novel telemanipulation system that provides kinesthetic and cutaneous stimuli to the user's hand to achieve accurate liquid dispensing by dexterously manipulating the deformable object (i.e., pipette). The experimental results revealed that the proposed approach to provide the user with multimodal haptic feedback considerably improves the quality of dosing with a remote pipette. Compared with pure visual feedback, the relative dosing error decreased by 66% and task execution time decreased by 18% when users manipulated the deformable pipette with a multimodal haptic interface in combination with visual feedback. The proposed technology can be potentially implemented in delicate dosing procedures during the antibody tests for COVID-19, chemical experiments, operation with organic materials, and telesurgery. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, technology permeates every aspect of human activity, from the professional to the recreational side, and the recent pandemic crisis has only amplified a clearly defined trend. Through portable devices, people play, work, and get information. The immediacy of information and of many aspects of our life is a condition that, once acquired, is difficult to give up. However, immediate information must also be correct, and not all issues can easily be simplified to the point of being understandable in the absence of basic theoretical notions to a large audience. This aspect is particularly relevant when dealing with issues related to human health and the communication problems encountered in recent months concerning the spread of SARS-CoV-2, and the vaccination campaign is there to prove it. With the intent of clarifying the advantages and disadvantages of fast and accessible information, in this article, some of the most widespread applications for mobile devices, dedicated to pollen allergens, air quality, parks, gardens, and green areas, were examined. A widespread lack of clarity on the sources of the data and on the criteria used to formulate synthetic judgments-that often confuse the final users-was noted.

ABSTRACT

Using online data for prices and real-time debit card transaction data on changes in expenditures for Switzerland allows us to track inflation on a daily basis. While the daily price index fluctuates around the official price index in normal times, it drops immediately after the lockdown related to the COVID19 pandemic. Official statistics reflect this drop only with a lag, specifically because data collection takes time and is impeded by lockdown conditions. Such daily real-time information can be useful to gauge the relative importance of demand and supply shocks and thus inform policymakers who need to determine appropriate policy measures.
